Day Tour: Karla & Bhaja Caves with Lonavala Exploration

Begin your day with a pick-up from your hotel in Mumbai and drive towards Lonavala, covering approximately 85 km in about 2–2.5 hours. The route takes you through changing landscapes—from bustling city roads to the lush greenery and rolling hills of the Western Ghats.

Upon arrival, start your exploration with the impressive Karla Caves, one of the finest examples of ancient Buddhist rock-cut architecture dating back to the 2nd century BCE. Climb the stone steps to reach the caves and explore the grand Chaitya Hall, adorned with intricately carved pillars and a remarkable vaulted ceiling. The scale and preservation of the site make it one of the most significant Buddhist monuments in India.

Continue to the nearby Bhaja Caves, a scenic group of caves nestled on a hillside. Known for their stupas, carvings, and ancient prayer halls, these caves offer a glimpse into early Buddhist monastic life. Observe the beautifully carved reliefs and the ingenious water cisterns used by monks, showcasing advanced engineering techniques of ancient times.

Next, proceed to the lesser-visited yet equally fascinating Bedse Caves. Set amidst serene surroundings, these caves are known for their peaceful ambiance and striking architectural symmetry. The grand entrance arch, intricately carved pillars, and well-preserved interiors provide a more tranquil and less crowded experience, allowing visitors to truly appreciate the artistry and spirituality of the site.

After exploring the caves, head to Lonavala town and enjoy a relaxing lunch at a local restaurant (optional), where you can savor authentic Maharashtrian cuisine.

Post lunch, visit Lonavala’s famous viewpoints, including Tiger Point, offering breathtaking views of deep valleys and rolling hills. Continue to Sunset Point, where the scenic beauty of the Sahyadri mountains creates a perfect setting to relax and unwind.

Later, explore Lonavala’s local markets, where you can browse for souvenirs, handicrafts, and regional specialties. Don’t miss the chance to taste the famous Lonavala chikki, a traditional sweet made from jaggery and nuts, which is a signature delicacy of the region.

After a fulfilling day of exploration, begin your return journey to Mumbai, covering approximately 85 km (2–2.5 hours). Upon arrival, you will be dropped off at your hotel, concluding your enriching journey through ancient heritage and scenic landscapes.
